RayHi, I'm Ray.
NinaAnd I'm Nina.
RayNina, you moved here two years ago. Was it hard to make friends?
NinaVery hard. In school it was easy. You just sit next to someone.
RayAnd now?
NinaNow everyone is busy. Everyone already has friends.
RaySo what worked for you?
NinaOne thing. I stopped saying we should hang out sometime.
RayWhy? That sounds friendly.
NinaIt is friendly. But sometime never comes.
RayThat's so true.
NinaSo now I say a day. Are you free Saturday?
RayJust a day. That's the whole change?
NinaThat's the whole change. Sometime is a wish. Saturday is a plan.
RayOkay, what else?
NinaGo to the same place twice.
RayThe same place?
NinaYes. The same coffee shop, the same class, the same park. People need to see you more than once.
RayBecause the second time, you're not a stranger.
NinaExactly. The second time you can say, oh, you're here again.
RayThat's a nice opener.
NinaAnd one more. Say yes for three months.
RaySay yes to everything?
NinaAlmost everything. For three months, if someone invites you, go. Even when you're tired.
RayThat sounds exhausting.
NinaIt is. But after three months, you have people. Then you can say no again.
RayLet's practice. I'll be someone you just met at a class.
NinaOkay.
RayThat was a good class. See you next week?
NinaYes! Hey, some of us get coffee after. Are you free Saturday morning?
RaySaturday? Sure, that works.
NinaGreat. Ten o'clock at the place across the street?
RaySee you there.
NinaDone. That took fifteen seconds.
RaySo: name a day, go to the same place twice, and say yes for three months.
NinaThat's it for today. See you next time.
